10 days in croatia road trip

Croatia is a beautiful country known for its crystal-clear beaches like Zlatni Rat, stunning national parks such as Plitvice Lakes, and its rich Roman history seen in ancient ruins and medieval towns. Whether you’re drawn to the rugged coastline along the Adriatic Sea, the charming islands, or the lush landscapes perfect for a road trip, Croatia has something for every traveler. After completing our road trip through Croatia, we wanted to share this guide and itinerary to help you plan your own unforgettable journey through this stunning country.

While you can complete a road trip in Croatia in less than a week, we highly recommend at least 10 days in Croatia to fully enjoy the country’s coastal towns, national parks, and hidden gems.

Why a Road Trip in Croatia?

The best way to experience Croatia is by car. We’ve done many road trips across Europe, and driving gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace—something public transport can’t offer. Whether you start in Pula or Dubrovnik, both cities have international airports, making them easy entry points.

Public transport lacks the flexibility to visit hidden gems, secluded beaches, and scenic towns. By car, you’ll have the freedom to explore more, many islands are reachable by car ferry, allowing you to visit places like Hvar, Brac or Korčula.

On our road trip in Croatia, we found the roads to be well-maintained, the highways in great condition, and tolls easy to pay by card. While the coastline can be rugged, an extensive network of tunnels and scenic highways makes the drive smooth and enjoyable.

Croatia is a safe country, and we didn’t encounter any issues during our trip. The local currency is the euro and most places accept card payments, making it convenient for travelers.

Day 1: Pula – Your Road Trip in Croatia Begins!

Pula is a fantastic starting point, with its rich Roman history, scenic coastline, and vibrant atmosphere. Things you can’t miss in Pula:

  • Pula Arena
  • Temple of Augustus
  • Arch of the Sergii

  • Brijuni Islands National Park

For accommodation, you have a couple of options. Stay overnight in Pula to fully experience the city’s nightlife, or drive a little further to the charming coastal towns of Poreč or Rovinj. This will position you perfectly for the next leg of your road trip.

Day 2: Rovinj, Poreč, and the Drive to Zagreb

rovinj
Old Town of Rovinj

Wake up early and start your day by exploring the picturesque town of Rovinj, one of the most charming spots on the Istrian Peninsula. Wander through its narrow cobblestone streets and enjoy the vibrant colors of the old town. Don’t miss the climb up to St. Euphemia Church, located at the highest point of the town. From here, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding islands.

After soaking in the sights, head over to Poreč, another beautiful town nearby. Take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, and if you’re in the mood for something sweet, treat yourself to some of the best ice cream in the area at one of the local gelaterias.

In the afternoon, it’s time to make the 250km (3h) drive to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. The journey will take you through scenic landscapes and charming small towns. Once in Zagreb, check in and enjoy a relaxing evening exploring the city’s historic center. You can visit Ban Jelačić Square, have dinner at a local restaurant, or simply enjoy a drink in one of the city’s vibrant cafes, reflecting on the highlights of your first day on the road.

Day 3: Explore Zagreb and Head to Plitvice

On this day, you’ll have a full day to explore Zagreb, the vibrant capital of Croatia. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning for a second look, the city offers a great mix of history, culture, and modern charm.

Things you can’t miss in Zagreb:

  • Ban Jelačić Square
  • Zagreb Cathedral
  • St. Mark’s Church
  • Upper Town (Gornji Grad)

In the late afternoon, start your drive to Plitvice Lakes National Park, a scenic 140km (2-hour) drive from Zagreb. If you still have daylight left, consider making a short stop in Rastoke, often called the “Small Plitvice.” This picturesque village features waterfalls and mills, and it’s a perfect little break before continuing to Plitvice.

Day 4: Explore Plitvice Lakes National Park

This day will surely be one of the highlights of your road trip in Croatia. If you’re a fan of nature, you really can’t miss Plitvice Lakes National Park—it’s a must-see destination that’s famous for its stunning waterfalls, lush forests, and crystal-clear lakes.

Our tip is to book your visit a few weeks in advance to secure your spot, especially during peak season. We recommend visiting between 9 and 10 a.m. to avoid the crowds from tour buses and the heat if you’re traveling in the summer. If you arrive later, you may find the park crowded, and it can get quite hot by midday.

We chose Program C (more info) during our visit, which covers a good mix of walking paths, boat rides, and scenic views. It’s the perfect way to experience the park in all its natural beauty, and it will take most of your day. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to take photos, explore hidden corners, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere.

If you still have some time left in the day after your visit, you can begin your drive to Krka, which is about a 160km (2-hour) drive.

Day 5: Krka National Park

krka national park

This will be your second day exploring a National Park in Croatia, but trust us—it’s worth it! Krka National Park is another must-visit, offering stunning waterfalls and lush landscapes. Unlike Plitvice, here you can actually take a dip in designated swimming areas, so don’t forget your swimsuit!

After a day of chasing waterfalls and cooling off in nature, hop back in the car and make your way to Split—an easy 85km (1-hour) drive. Time to swap waterfalls for Roman ruins and seaside vibes!

Day 6: Explore Split & Ferry to Hvar or Brač

Diocletian's Palace

Welcome to Split, a city packed with history, seaside charm, and a lively atmosphere. Start your day early and dive into its top attractions before the midday heat kicks in. If you’re visiting in the summer, take a break from sightseeing and cool off at one of Split’s pristine beaches.

As the day winds down, head to the port to catch a ferry to Hvar or Brač. Both are fantastic island destinations, so you really can’t go wrong. Just keep in mind that car ferries, especially in summer, are very popular. Jadrolinija is the main ferry company operating these routes, so it’s a good idea to check their website and book your ferry tickets in advance if possible. If you can’t book a specific time, get to the queue early to avoid long waits.

Things you can’t miss in Split:

  • Diocletian’s Palace
  • The Four Gates of Diocletian’s Palace
  • Riva Promenad
  • Saint Domnius Cathedral & Bell Tower

Day 7 & 8: Island hopping is a must-do on a 10-day road trip in Croatia.

Zlatni Rat

For the last leg of your road trip in Croatia, you have two fantastic island options: Hvar or Brač. Both are easily accessible by car ferry from Split, and there’s no wrong choice—it all depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for!

Hvar – Chic Towns & Natural Wonders

  • Beaches in Hvar
  • Hvar Town – A historic and lively coastal town, perfect for exploring its Venetian-style streets and enjoying waterfront dining.
  • Fortica Fortress – Hike up to this medieval fortress for the best panoramic views of Hvar and the Pakleni Islands.
  • Pakleni Islands – A small archipelago off the coast of Hvar, perfect for a boat trip with hidden beaches and crystal-clear waters.
  • The Blue Cave – Located on the nearby island of Biševo, this cave is famous for its glowing blue light, created by sunlight reflecting through an underwater opening. It’s one of Croatia’s most unique natural wonders!

Brač – Beach Paradise & Stunning Views

  • Zlatni Rat Beach – One of the most famous beaches in Europe, this unique golden-hued beach constantly changes shape due to the tides and wind.
  • Vidova Gora – The highest peak on the Adriatic islands, offering incredible views of Zlatni Rat and the surrounding coastline.
  • Škrip & Olive Oil Museum – A charming inland village where you can learn about Brač’s long history of olive oil production.

Which one should you choose?

If you want lively nightlife, charming architecture, and unique natural attractions like the Blue Cave, go for Hvar. If you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, stunning beaches, and incredible panoramic views, Brač is the way to go. Either way, you can’t go wrong!

Day 9 and 10: Dubrovnik

Take an early ferry back to Split from Hvar or Brač and begin your scenic drive to Dubrovnik (around 3.5 to 4 hours). The journey is a real treat, with stunning views of the Adriatic coastline at every turn. Along the way, you’ll pass charming coastal villages and rugged landscapes.

If you’re feeling a bit tired or want to stretch your legs, there are several public beaches along the route where you can stop, relax, and even have a picnic. These spots are perfect for a quick break to enjoy the sun and the sea before continuing your journey.

Once you arrive in Dubrovnik, get ready to dive into the city’s rich history and breathtaking views!

Things you can’t miss in Split:

  • Take the Dubrovnik Cable Car– For unbeatable panoramic views of the city and coastline, hop on the cable car to the top of Mount Srđ. It’s the easiest way to take in the breathtaking scenery, and you’ll get a new perspective of the Old Town and the surrounding Adriatic.
  • Visit the Old Town – A must for any Dubrovnik visit, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with ancient streets, charming squares, and stunning landmarks. Don’t miss Stradun, the Sponza Palace, and the Rector’s Palace.
  • Walk the City Walls – Dubrovnik’s city walls are iconic. They offer a 1.5 km walk along the perimeter of the Old Town with spectacular views over the rooftops, sea, and surrounding landscape. It’s a great way to get a feel for the city’s history and beauty.
  • Rent a Kayak – Explore Dubrovnik from the water by renting a kayak or a paddleboard. You’ll get to glide past the city walls and see Dubrovnik from a completely different perspective. The waters are crystal clear, and you might even spot some caves or secluded beaches along the way.
